![]() ![]() For years, I thought I wanted a Fender Bassman, but after trying out amps in person, I was an instant Vox convert. If you can't try them in person, watch some videos (with decent speakers, not your phone) of comparisons online. ![]() I’ve tried other headphone guitar ampsthe Vox amPlug. in TV-front cabinets, much like the early to mid-50s tweed Fender amps. But the Vox VTX series blows it away in tone quality. It has a dozen different amp models, from cleaner options like Fender’s iconic Twin Reverb to grittier amps like the Metal 2000. The Vox AC30 is a guitar amplifier manufactured by Vox. Its a good amp, almost unbeatable for the price. The Voxes sound better than the Champion and are more versatile. Then you'll be able to see if you like the sound of your pedals in whichever amp you choose. For my money, the best-sounding modeling amp in that class is the Vox VT20X or VT40X. Most shops want you to buy an amp you like and will let you try your own equipment on them (if you're not sure, call and ask!). The VT-40x has some really nice 60s crunch and heavy distortion. It seems to be 'fuller' with greater a greater spectrum of trem and bass ranges. If you're able, try out both amps - if you have a pedalboard you're worried about, bring it with you and see how everything sounds. In my opinion, the Katana does the cleans better and the overall sound coming out is more appealing to my tastes. That and the portability are huge reasons to go smaller. One of the nice things about the slightly lower wattage amps is you can operate a lot closer to the natural breakup point at lower volumes that won't drown out your bandmates or get the cops called for a noise complaint. I personally haven't played a Deluxe Reverb, but my friends who have say it's in the same realm as an AC-15 in keeping up with a drummer. The Vox are amplifiers with little headroom, that is, they tend to drive fast, medium, but with a very good high end that gives it its characteristic audio and its chime. You’ll likely need both amps to get the full range of sounds you want. The Vox is better for playing clean tones, while the Fender is better for playing overdriven or distorted tones. ![]() The AC-30 is a fantastic amp, but overkill for most people (and Vox amps feel like they're made of lead, so that's another argument to go with the smaller one). The Vox has a clearer and brighter sound, while the Fender has a warmer and fuller sound. The AC-15 is more than enough amp to keep up with the average drummer. As someone who plays an AC-15 when I'm with my bandmates (sadly not very often now) and a Blackstar HT-5 in my bedroom practicing, the pedals will sound different depending on the amp, but different doesn't mean bad. ![]()
