![]() ![]() More recently, we’ve become concerned over some new patterns on music blogs themselves.Ī handful of labels and PR outlets have focused their efforts on illicitly gaining coverage on Hype Machine-indexed blogs. This has helped millions of people find some truly incredible music through each of the blogs in our index. It’s disappointing, but it comes with the territory of maintaining a music chart that remains closely watched six years later. Since that post, we’ve prevented hundreds of artists and marketing teams from gaining an unfair advantage on our site. Hype Machine founder Anthony Volodkin wrote:Ī few years have passed since I’ve written about our approach to Hype Machine’s Popular charts. Now, they tackle another problem: PR representatives infiltrating blogs in order to get their artists more exposure. In 2009, Hype Machine addressed some of these issues and took preventative measures to stop artists and their teams from altering the charts. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting a swarm of people to vote a song up, and sometimes it involves algorithms and complicated tech stuff that I never understood. But for as long as I’ve known about Hype Machine, I’ve known about managers, artists, and PR teams who manipulate the system. If a song is in the top 10 on the front page of Hype Machine, the numbers will skyrocket. Getting Pigeons & Planes included on Hype M was a big step for the site, and I soon realized the impact the website can have on the success of a song. I found out about Hype Machine very early in my blogging days. Whereas the Billboard charts reflect radio hits and mainstream success, Hype Machine highlights SoundCloud virality and blog exposure, and it’s filled with remixes, mash-ups, and new artists who aren’t yet known by the masses. For music lovers whose consumption is based almost solely on the internet, it’s a valuable resource for keeping up with what’s popular. These “likes” then get turned into charts that reflect what’s going on in the music blogosphere. For those unfamiliar, Hype Machine is an aggregation website that pulls streams from music blogs and allows users to vote them up by clicking a small heart-shaped button. ![]()
